We’re excited to share a recent development as we continue to bring The Dunamis Initiative to churches and Christian organizations all over the world. I (Don) am incredibly honored and humbled to have been given the opportunity to serve as Chair of Addiction Medicine Section within the Christian Medical and Dental Association, a professional organization that connects almost 20,000 Christian physicians, dentists, residents, and students globally. For almost 100 years, this group has encouraged physicians and dentists to fellowship with pastors in an effort to collaborate in areas where common goals can be identified and promoted. The merging of scientific inquiry and the power of the Holy Spirit is our society’s greatest hope in finding lasting answers to our most difficult problems.
The Addiction Medicine Section of CMDA exists to prevent and treat addiction and transform lives, by God’s grace, love, and power. They strive to provide compassionate excellence in all aspects of addiction care, including whole-person prevention and treatment, education, advocacy, empowerment of others, research, church, and community partnerships, and interprofessional collaboration and support. Over the past few years, we have witnessed significant growth and development within the organization. It is my hope as its new chairman, that in addition to ongoing education and fellowship of our members, we can explore new ways to encourage and partner with churches to add both social and spiritual support to those seeking freedom from the bondage of addiction.
The rise in addiction fatalities across the United States seems to parallel the increase in secular and atheistic beliefs. This trend is not unique to our field but is rather indicative of a broader societal challenge. It’s as if we’re in a tug-of-war, and our team is shrinking. However, I firmly believe that by empowering Christian practitioners and trainees to boldly proclaim Christ as the essential healer in the doctor-patient relationship, we can make a significant impact. With God pulling on our end of the rope, I think we know who will win in the end!
