STEP 4 ISN’T ABOUT SHAME. IT’S ABOUT COURAGE.

After Step 3 introduces faith and daily surrender, Step 4 invites something deeper: honesty. Not vague self-improvement—an intentional look at what’s been shaping your thoughts, reactions, relationships, and choices.

Many people reach Step 4 and quietly disappear. Not because they don’t want healing… but because shame convinces them it’s safer not to look too closely.

We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

Step 4 is where healing gets practical: you stop trying to “think your way out” and begin naming what’s actually been happening—on paper, with God’s help.

FROM HIDING TO HONESTY

This step can feel intimidating at first. Let’s face it—most of us have spent years trying to stay in control.

Even after admitting we can’t fix ourselves, we still hold on tightly to the idea that we should be running our own lives.

You may wonder:

What if I’m judged for what I’ve done?

What if I uncover something I can’t handle?

What if this brings back shame I’ve tried to bury?

Step 4 doesn’t ask you to relive everything for the sake of guilt. It asks you to tell the truth—so that what’s been hidden can finally lose its power.

The Christian Value of Step 4: Courage

In The Dunamis Effect, each step is paired with a Christian value. Step 4 is rooted in Courage.

But Christian courage isn’t white-knuckling your way through painful memories. It’s letting God into the process.

Dr. Don describes it like walking into a dark room without a flashlight—bumping into things, afraid of what might be lurking in the shadows. But when you invite God in, you don’t stay in the dark. You get light.

And here’s the good news: as a follower of Christ, you don’t have to go through this step alone.

WHAT courage LOOKS LIKE

Step 4 is simple—but not easy.

It looks like:

  • Putting pen to paper (not just thinking about your past)
  • Making a timeline of your life—what you’ve done and what’s happened to you
  • Naming the shame loop for what it is (and refusing to keep self-condemnation in charge)
  • Asking God to search your heart, not to punish you—but to heal you

A powerful starting prayer for Step 4 comes from Psalm 139:

“Search me, God, and know my heart… see if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

Courage grows when you stop trying to do this alone—and let the Holy Spirit guide what you’re ready to see.
