Step 5: Honesty

From Hiding to Freedom

God already knows every part of our story. Step 5 invites us to stop hiding, break free from shame, and experience the healing that comes through honesty.

STEP 5 ISN'T ABOUT CONFESSION. IT'S ABOUT FREEDOM.

After Step 4 helps uncover what has been shaping our thoughts, behaviors, and relationships, Step 5 invites us to bring those discoveries into the light. Not to be punished—but to be healed.

Many people reach Step 5 and hesitate. Not because they don't want freedom... but because fear convinces them it's safer to keep certain things hidden.

"We admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs."

Step 5 is where recovery becomes deeply personal. It's the moment we stop carrying our secrets alone and begin experiencing the healing that honesty makes possible.

FROM SECRETS TO HEALING

This step can feel intimidating at first. Most of us have spent years hiding, minimizing, explaining away, or carrying burdens we never wanted anyone else to see.

Even after admitting we need help, it can be difficult to believe that complete honesty is actually safe.

What if God is disappointed in me?

What if my deepest secret changes how people see me?

What if I'm never forgiven?

Step 5 isn't about exposing yourself to shame. It's about breaking shame's power by bringing the truth into the light.

THE CHRISTIAN VALUE OF STEP 5: HONESTY

In The Dunamis Effect, each step is paired with a Christian value. Step 5 is rooted in Honesty.

But biblical honesty is more than simply telling the truth.

It's the willingness to stop hiding.

To stop pretending.

To stop carrying burdens that God never intended us to carry alone.

Dr. Don reminds us that many people see confession as standing before a harsh judge. Scripture presents something very different.

Jesus is the Great Physician.

A good physician needs accurate information in order to provide the right treatment. In the same way, honesty allows God to address the places where healing is still needed.

And here's the good news: God already knows your story and loves you completely.

WHAT HONESTY LOOKS LIKE

Step 5 is simple—but not easy.

It looks like:

  • Sharing your inventory with God in complete honesty
  • Being truthful with yourself instead of minimizing or rationalizing
  • Confiding in a trusted Recovery Partner, sponsor, pastor, or mature believer
  • Letting go of secrecy, shame, and isolation
  • Trusting God's grace more than your fear

A powerful Scripture for Step 5 comes from James 5:16:

"Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed."

Healing often begins the moment honesty replaces hiding.
