step 6: Patience

Why Willpower Isn't Enough

If you've ever wondered why the same unhealthy habits or patterns keep resurfacing, you're not alone. Most of us assume that lasting change comes from trying harder or having more willpower. Yet over time, we discover that determination alone isn't enough to produce the kind of transformation we long for.

Christian AA Step 6 offers a different perspective. Rather than striving for perfection through our own effort, this step invites us to become entirely willing for God to do what only He can do—replace old desires with better ones that reflect His character. That kind of transformation doesn't happen overnight. It requires patience, trust, and a willingness to let God work in His timing.

In this teaching, Dr. Don Middleton explains why Step 6 is one of the most hopeful steps in recovery and how patience becomes the bridge between honest self-examination and lasting spiritual growth.

Step 6 Isn't About Trying Harder. It's About Becoming Willing.

"We became entirely ready to have God remove all our unhelpful habits that separate us from Him and others."
- Step 6 from The Dunamis Effect

Many of us approach recovery believing that if we just tried harder, exercised more discipline, or had enough willpower, we could finally overcome our struggles. But sooner or later, we discover that behavior modification only goes so far. We may be able to resist unhealthy habits for a time, but resisting isn't the same as being transformed.

Step 6 shifts the focus from our effort to God's work. Rather than asking us to become perfect, it asks us to become willing. Willing to let God reshape our hearts. Willing to trust His timing. Willing to believe that He can replace unhealthy desires with better ones.

This step reminds us that lasting change doesn't come from forcing ourselves to become different. It comes from allowing God to do a deeper work within us—one that changes not only what we do, but what we desire.

From Willpower to Transformation

Many people enter recovery believing that success depends on determination alone. But if willpower were enough, lasting change would be easy. Step 6 invites us to stop relying solely on ourselves and begin trusting the transforming power of God.

Why do I keep struggling with the same habits?

Can God really change my desires?

Why isn't willpower enough?

The good news is that God isn't simply interested in helping us resist temptation. He wants to transform us from the inside out. As unhealthy desires lose their grip, new desires begin to grow—desires that reflect His character, His purposes, and the abundant life He created us to experience.

THE CHRISTIAN VALUE OF STEP 6: patience

Patience is more than waiting. It is trusting that God is faithfully working, even when change feels slower than we'd like.

We live in a culture that expects instant results. But healthy things rarely grow overnight. Dr. Don compares this process to planting grass seed. You don't scatter seed today and expect a lush lawn tomorrow. Growth happens gradually as the roots develop beneath the surface.

God often works the same way in our lives. While we may wish He would instantly remove every unhealthy habit or attitude, He frequently chooses to transform us through a process. As we continue walking with Him, He patiently replaces old desires with new ones, shaping us into the people He created us to become.

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." — Galatians 6:9

WHAT patience LOOKS LIKE

Living out Step 6 doesn't mean sitting back and waiting for change to magically happen. It means actively cooperating with God as He transforms your heart over time.

Patience looks like:

  • Becoming willing instead of demanding instant change.
  • Trusting God's timing even when progress feels slow.
  • Allowing God to replace unhealthy desires with healthier, God-honoring ones.
  • Celebrating progress instead of chasing perfection.
  • Continuing to seek Christ, even when transformation happens one step at a time.

The promise of Step 6 isn't that you'll never struggle again. It's that God is committed to finishing the work He has begun in you. As you remain willing and patient, He will continue shaping your heart and leading you toward lasting freedom.
