WHAT IS STEPPING INTO POWER?
Stepping Into Power is a Christ-centered teaching series that walks through the 12 Steps one step at a time using short, easy-to-digest videos and real-world examples.
Each step is grounded in Scripture and designed to support real-life recovery and spiritual growth.
EXPLORE EACH STEP
The 12 Steps of AA have helped millions find freedom, healing, and sobriety. But many Christians struggle to fully connect the process to their faith or understand how the Steps align with Scripture.
Stepping Into Power approaches each step through a Christ-centered lens—grounding recovery in biblical truth, identity in Christ, and God’s transforming power.
While the 12 Steps are often associated with substance abuse, the principles explored in Stepping Into Power apply to many forms of addiction and destructive patterns—including gambling, self-harm, and other behaviors rooted in loss of control.
Stepping Into Power is designed for:
- Individuals exploring recovery or spiritual growth
- People new to the 12 Steps seeking clarity and context
- Those actively working the Steps who want deeper insight
- Friends and family members wanting understanding
- Churches and recovery leaders looking for accessible teaching
This isn’t about replacing the 12 Steps. It’s about helping believers integrate recovery with their walk with Christ.
Stepping Into Power is not a treatment program—it’s a practical guide to help you understand and work the Steps through a biblical lens. Legal Disclaimer
The teachings in this series are drawn from The Dunamis Effect and the Dunamis Effect Workbook.
For each step, we’ve included the corresponding book chapter and guided workbook questions so you can begin applying the step in your own life as you follow along with the series.
INTRODUCTION
STEPPING INTO POWER Series
A 12-Step Journey, One Step at a Time
This short introduction provides an overview of the 12 Steps of AA, the spiritual principles behind them, and why a biblical lens brings deeper clarity to recovery. It also explains how the 12 Steps are explored through Scripture as defined in The Dunamis Effect.
Think of this as the foundation before we step into Step 1.
step 1
surrender
What Surrender Really Means
This teaching explores Step 1 as it is defined in The Dunamis Effect—using clear language and real-world examples to help you understand what surrender actually looks like in everyday life.
This is the foundation of the recovery journey and sets the tone for every step that follows.
step 2
hope
WHAT HOPE REALLY MEANS
This teaching explores Step 2 as it is defined in The Dunamis Effect—helping you understand how hope begins to grow when we realize we don't have to fix ourselves.
Step 2 invites us to believe that God can restore what addiction has broken. For many people, this belief doesn’t appear instantly. It develops slowly as we begin to see change happening in our lives and in the lives of others walking the same path.
Hope is the turning point that moves us forward in the recovery journey.
step 3
faith
WHAT FAITH REALLY MEANS
This teaching explores Step 3 as it is defined in The Dunamis Effect—helping you understand how faith becomes real when we stop trying to control everything on our own.
Step 3 invites us to move from hope into action by making a daily decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God.
For many people, this step can feel intimidating. Trust doesn’t always come instantly. It grows over time as we begin to notice God at work—through answered prayers, small steps of obedience, and the strength to keep going one day at a time.
Faith is the turning point that helps us release control and walk forward under God’s care.
step 4
courage
From Hiding to Honesty
Step 4 invites us to take an honest look at our lives, patterns, fears, and wounds. For many people, this can feel uncomfortable or overwhelming at first. But healing often begins when we bring the things we’ve buried into the light and allow God to meet us there with grace instead of shame.
Courage is the willingness to face the truth so transformation can begin.
step 5
honesty
From Hiding to Freedom
Step 5 invites us to confess the truth about our lives to God, ourselves, and another person. For many people, this step feels vulnerable because addiction thrives in secrecy and isolation. But when we begin to speak honestly about our struggles, shame loses its grip and healing can finally take root.
Honesty is the turning point where freedom begins to replace hiding.
