The person struggling for sobriety often lives in a frustrating cycle—moving back and forth between abstinence and relapse for months, years, and sometimes even decades. From the outside, it can look like a life wasted. But God doesn’t waste anything. Not the setbacks, not the relapses, and not even the years spent stuck in the fight. In fact, those seasons often become the foundation for transformation once a person finally reaches the end of their own strength and surrenders.
Throughout the Bible, we see God consistently working through broken people. He doesn’t wait for perfection. He meets people in their weakness and uses what they’ve walked through to shape something meaningful. Time and time again, the people God uses most powerfully are those who have experienced deep struggle. Their darkest seasons become the training ground for a different kind of life—one marked not by survival, but by purpose, identity, and impact. Thousands of years later, we are still talking about their stories.
That is power.
What Does “Dunamis” Mean?
The word Dunamis is a Greek term that refers to power, but not just power in action. It describes potential power—the kind of power that exists even before it is released. Think of a bow drawn back, holding tension before the arrow is released, or a spring wound tight, ready to move. That stored energy has the capacity to become something active and life-changing.
In the Bible, dunamis is used over a hundred times, often in connection with the power of God—especially when Jesus heals. This is not human strength or self-discipline. It is divine power becoming active in a person’s life.
Where Addiction Recovery Gets Stuck
For nearly a century, one of the most effective frameworks for addiction recovery has been the 12 Steps, first introduced by Alcoholics Anonymous in 1939. It begins with a statement that most people resist: “We admitted we were powerless…” That word—powerless—goes against everything in us. We want control. We want solutions. We want to believe that if we try harder or think differently, we can fix the problem ourselves.
But most people who have lived this cycle know how it plays out. We try, we quit, we relapse, and we start over again. Until something deeper changes, the cycle continues.
Many people spend years trying to overcome addiction through discipline, knowledge, physical health, or even partial spiritual practices. While these can be helpful, they rarely produce lasting transformation on their own. The real turning point comes with surrender—not as a concept, but as a daily decision to admit, “I cannot do this on my own.”
The Power We Don’t Have
This is where Dunamis enters the picture.
The truth is simple, but difficult to accept: we do not have the power to fully overcome addiction by ourselves. But God does. That is the foundation behind the 12 Steps, even if it is not always clearly stated. The power needed for transformation comes from outside of us.
When we surrender control, ask for help, and stay connected to God, that potential power—Dunamis—becomes active. This is where real, lasting change begins.
Can Someone Truly Be “Cured”?
This is where the conversation often becomes uncomfortable. In many recovery communities, people are encouraged to identify with their addiction for life. The intention is to promote humility and awareness, which are important. But it raises a deeper question.
If someone is diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and then makes lasting changes—improving their diet, exercising, and maintaining healthy lab results for years—do they still define themselves by that diagnosis? Or do they recognize that something has fundamentally changed?
They cannot return to their old lifestyle without consequences, but they are no longer living in the same condition.
In the same way, we believe that surrender to God, working the steps, and removing the things that once controlled us can lead to something more than management. It can lead to transformation. Through a profound spiritual intervention, a person can experience healing that goes beyond simply coping with addiction.
A New Identity
At Dunamis, we believe identity matters. We do not introduce ourselves by our past. We do not say, “I’m Don, and I’m an alcoholic.” Instead, we say, “I’m Don—a child of God.” What the world calls you is not more powerful than what your Father calls you. When identity shifts, behavior often follows.
More Than White-Knuckle Sobriety
There is a difference between simply not using and actually being free. White-knuckle sobriety is exhausting. It is driven by fear, discipline, and constant effort. Transformation is different. Through surrender, working the steps, and removing the things that once held us captive, something deeper begins to take place. The desire itself begins to lose its grip.
That is not something we manufacture. That is something God does.
Living in Dunamis Power
When the power of God becomes active in a person’s life, the entire experience of recovery changes. It is no longer about waking up and hoping to get through the day. It becomes a life marked by gratitude, purpose, and growth. Not perfect, but different—stronger, clearer, and more grounded.
Because the same power that heals, restores, and transforms is still available today. When that power moves from potential to active in your life, you do not just survive recovery—you live it.
